Construction of 125 Night shelters in Mumbai is in progress

As per the order of the Supreme Court, the work of providing 125 Night shelters per 1 lakh population in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is in progress, this has informed to RTI activist Anil Galgali by Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Night Shelters are currently open in 20 places and 125 shelter work is progress in other places. 

RTI activist Anil Galgali had met Mumbai Municipal Commissioner and urge to construct the  Night shelter in Mumbai. Anil Galgali, citing the Supreme Court order, demanded to set up 125 shelters in Mumbai, per the 1 lakh population. Assistant Commissioner of the Municipal Planning Department, Greater Mumbai, has informed Anil Galgali that there are 20 shelters in progress. There are 4 shelters that are under construction and four starting soon. The administrative department of the municipality has provided a list of 44 Social Welfare places to indicate shelters. The municipality is working to start construction of 4 shelters on the first floor of Toilets which is chargeble and 4 places. It is also proposed to construct a building for the urban homeless on a reserved plot as per new development plan- 2034 in 66 places. A Social Welfare center has been notified by Ward level Administrative Officer's. They include 7 A Ward, 5 C Ward, 3 F North, 2 T Ward, 1 E Ward, 1 G South, 3 H East, 1 L Ward, 6 M East Ward, 1 N Ward, 1 P South, 1 R Central , 2 R North, 2 R South, 2 S Ward, 1 T Ward, 4 K West and 1 G South. Whereas sanitation complex are ready at 4 locations at Paral and Shivadi which is waiting for final approval. Also, temporary sheds are under construction at six places in JJ, Hinduja, Chembur, Shivaji Nagar and Parel.


According to Anil Galgali, the Municipality should set up a ward level system to provide to maintain the shelter in proper way and necessary facilities once shelters are started so that these shelters will be most useful to the homeless.
