RTI activists and people from Mumbai, Mira Bhayandar and Thane participated at the Air India Modern School of Kalina on Sunday against the amendments of the RTI Act by the Central Government. In the meeting held in Mumbai against the amendment of the said Act, it has been decided to emphasize on the need to go public and gather a movement against the amendments.
Former Union Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi said that the changes made without the necessity are wrong and that the government is not giving concrete answers. Anjali Damania said that after the change, the battles have started and now we need to fight the battle at all levels. RTI activist Anil Galgali said that the government has made changes in the constitution by ignoring the provisions and rules. The government is a conducting a new experiment to put pressure on the Information Commissioners directly so that people cannot exercise their right to information.
AAP spokesperson Preeti Memon Sharma said that the amendment is being brought about so that Information Commissioners can be controlled by giving them post retirement benefits, thus the environment is being destroyed. Senior journalist Hemant Desai said that politics being played out with ED, CBI.
Journalist Ravindra Ambekar said that it is wrong to expect from the politicians by the people. Adv. Vijay Kurley said that people need to get on the road. Kamalakar Shenoy said that the government is directly and indirectly amending all the laws which were providing justice to the citizens. The meeting was being moderated by GR Vora.
A resolution was to fight against this amendment at all levels.Bhaskar Prabhu, Mohammad Afzal, Sunil Ahya, Dolphy D'Souza, Sudhir Badami, Clarence Pinto, Sharad Yadav, Krishna Gupta, Brijesh Arya were present on the occasion.
