Peninsula Hotel using Market building for Parties & Reception

The Ground plus One building constructed to be used as BMC Market in Sakinaka is being used as Grand reception banquet hall by Peninsula Grand Hotel. An RTI inquiry by RTI Activist Anil Galgali revealed that during the past Seven years no vegetable was sold in the this 'Market' building. Instead the hotel has been giving out this premises on rent for parties & receptions. BMC has recently served a notice to the hotel owner Karunakar Raju Shetty on 5th May 2017. Before issuing of the notice, An inspection of the premises was conducted on 13th April 2017, Which failed to find any indication of a Market being run in the building.

The hotel was permitted on the land reserved for Market by BMC on the condition that it would undertake the construction of the Market. A ground plus one building did come up on the plot, But later changes in design were undertaken and the Ground floor was changed to felicitate private functions. The separate entrance to the market building was closed down and it was internally connected to the hotel.

In 2012, When Manisha Mhaiskar was Additional Municipal commissioner a lease agreement was signed between the owner of Peninsula Next Shetty & the BMC. Ms Mhaiskar permitted the lease in presence of Standing Committee members Rajhans Singh and Sameer Desai, On the recommendations of then Deputy Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale & Assistant Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kamat. Since then the place designated for sale of vegetables has gained reputation for its Marraige ceremonies and liquor parties.

Anil Galgali has written to BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to take possession of the building for use as Vegetable Market for common public. The large amount of money collected by the owner as rent from parties, Must also be reimbursed to the BMC. And a case of defrauding the Municipal Corporation must be registered FIR against the owner of the hotel.
