Suspension of BMC officers found guilty of lax performance in desilting of storm water drains, continued by the Review committee

It is known that the MCGM commissioner Ajoy Mehta had suspended staff of the SWD department ranging from the Chief Engineer to a Mukadam in September 2015 for irregularities in the desilting of drains causing floods in Mumbai. After 6 months the issue of their suspension was placed before a Review committee headed by a Dy Commissioner, which has rejected their appeal for reinstatement and has extended the suspension further. This information was provided to RTI Activist Anil Galgali by the BMC administration In a RTI application made by Anil Galgali, he had demanded list of officers suspended by the BMC in the last 5 years. Enquiry Department of the BMC handed over documents related to the Review Committee Meeting-2 . In the meeting held on the 22nd March of 2016 under the Chairmanship of Deputy Municipal Commissioner discuss the suspension of total 41 officers from various department, which included suspension of 12 officers in the nullah cleasning work in September 2015. Ajoy Mehta had firstlysuspended 10 officers on the 20.09.2015 and two days later i.e 22.9.2015 suspended 2 more of its officers due to irregularities found in the Nullah Cleaning work. Suspended for more than 6 months, their petition comes under the Review Committee-2. GAD's DMC Sudhir Naik continued the suspension of Chief Engineer of Vigilance Department Uday Murudgkar, Assistant Engineer Sudesh Gawali, Pradip patil, Sanjeev koli, Ramesh Patvardhan, Sub Engineer Rahul Parekh, Prashant Patel, Bhagwan Rane, Prafulla Wadnere, Sambhaji Bacchav, Naresh Poil and Mukadam Shantaram Korde. Apart from Naik in the committee Chief Enquiry Officer Ravindra Danane, Chief Engineer of Vigilance S O Kori were also present in the Committee meet. Anil Galgali feels that the decision on these officers suspension should be immediately tackled as they get 75% of their salaries just by sitting at home. If they are dismissed from the services permanently, there would be savings of such outgoings and there would be a drop in such corrupt malpractice in future, concludes Galgali.

  1. Suspension is not 1 punishment. Enquiry should be completed on priority basis and the delinquent officer should either be charge sheeted or exonerated. The greater the delay, more the chances of evidences disappearing.
